Cooler Weather is Here to Stay

As next week we begin new modules in grade 6-9, I wanted to remind students the expectation of being in an outdoor module.  If you are playing a sport (broom ball) the expectation is that you are changed into appropriate PE clothing to be active while staying warm.  Demin is not acceptable for either movement or warmth.  Please pack track pants, sweatpants or tights; something to cover your skin.  Change your shirt (for hygienic reasons) and then put layers over top like a hoodie or winter jacket.  Gloves or mitts are absolutely necessary and something to cover your ears is highly recommended.

For the walking module, changing into PE gear is less necessary, but you are still expected to come to class prepared.  Appropriate footwear, winter jacket, mitts/gloves and something to cover your ears.  Late fall is an awesome time to get outside, but only if you are prepared for it!

Grade 4-5 Activity Day

I’m so impressed with how well the grade 4/5 students were able to sign up and organize themselves today during period 3.  There are a few students who did not bring their ranking sheets back.  They can come to the gym to sign up during their PE period and there is still space at the Talisman Center and also on the Glenbow Hike.

Thank you to all the parents who have already contacted me to volunteer!  With this huge group we’ll need so many and I’m grateful for your gift of time!

All money and coloured forms MUST be submitted to the PE staff.  It is a lot of students to sign up and we need to keep our trips organized.  Please help remind your child to bring their forms and money to the gym as soon as possible!

Any students who cannot attend due to a prior engagement that is unchangeable (doctor appointment, family vacation, etc) please email alconnolley@cbe.ab.ca and I’ll record this so that we do not continually ask your child for forms.

Great work grade 4s and 5s!

Play-Off Week Comes to a Close

With the first week of November nearing a close, the PE team would like to thank all our athletes that have represented CNG for our fall athletes for all their hard work this season.

Our Cross Country did, though small in size, competed incredibly well.  It’s a sport that forces students to show independent commitment and desire to pursue excellence for themselves.

Our soccer teams, struggled to get much practice time this season, but worked hard to continue to improve and build as a team.  Congrats to our Girls’ team that won in their playoff game.

Our Volleyball teams all finished their seasons this week with none moving on to finals next week.  Each team showed incredible integrity all season.  Many very strong individuals who we hope continue with volleyball in coming year!

November brings a whole TON of wrestling.  Please see athletic calendar for the dates of all tournaments including our home tournament at the end of the month.

All fall athletes we’ll have our wind up spaghetti party in December.  Stay tuned for more information later this month.

We are proud of all of you.  You demonstrate all the key values that our school has identified as important.  You are the face of our school in the community and should be very proud of yourselves.

Grade 6-9 Activity Day Update Day 2

Excellent job to all student who have signed up so far.  A few notes for students who have already signed up:

  • Please bring your coloured A of R form to PE this week and throw it in the black bin outside the office door.  Make sure your name is on it!
  • If you needed to complete your payment, bring your money to PE and pay before going into the change room

For students still needing to sign up:

  • The doors will open tomorrow at 7:45am.  There is no need to come earlier than that with so few students left to sign up. If for some reason you cannot take care of this before school tomorrow, please bring your sign up sheet and money to PE
  • Activities still open for sign up are:
    • ClearOne Badminton for grade 6/7 girls wanting to play doubles
    • Talisman Multisport Jamboree
    • Chester Lake Snowshoeing
    • Mount Shark Cross Country Skiing

For students who cannot attend the Dec 7th Activity Day due to a prior engagement (doctor appointment, family vacation, etc), please have your parent email me or send a note so that I can document that you will be away on that day.

Update on Grade 6-9 Activity Day

What an incredibly awesome day of signing up for Winter Activity Day!!!  Over 400 of our students displayed their interest in being physically active  in our city and that makes this old PE teachers heart so happy!!!

If you did not get your forms/money in today, do not fear there are still spaces available.  List below are facilities that are not longer available:

  • The Hanger
  • Village Square
  • Grade 6/7 badminton Girls singles, Boys singles, Boys Doubles
  • All grade 8/9 badminton

There are a couple activities that are very near capacity:

  • Dance Workshop
  • Winsport Ski/Snowboarding
  • Vivo Hockey Workshop

The doors will open at 7:45am again tomorrow and we’ll continue our registration.  Any students that do not get in before school will once again have the opportunity to sign up after school.  Remember students, like we discussed in class on Monday… be sure to have your sign up slip and money to hold your spot.

What to Look Forward to in November

Another great month has come and gone in the gym.  Many new activities studied: wrestling, combative games, gymnastics, handball, floor hockey, cricket, fitness, kickball and more!  Students have done an incredible job working on their fitness daily and completing fitness tests on Fridays!  Building strong healthy bodies at CNG!

November will bring new sports and a need for warm outdoor athletic wear.  Please ensure your child has sweatpants or track pants or tights for outdoor modules this month.  Students are still required to change (for hygiene and mobility reasons) so preparedness for the weather is important.  Extra socks, mini mitts and something for their ears will also be a good idea.

PE gear – tshirt, shorts, hoodies and sweatpants – are available for purchase anytime through the main office.  They have tons of stock!  Please ensure your child’s name is on all items somewhere to help us get lost items back to the right student.

Grade 6-9 students will be receiving a letter on Nov 2nd about this year’s activity day.  On December 7th this year, these students will take a trip somewhere in and around the city to be active.  Besides being part of the program of studies, we want to encourage our young bodies to find different places around Calgary to be active and find new experiences they could become interested.  FOR SIGN-UP: each location/activity has a limited number of spots (due to bussing, facility capacity, number of instructors available and safety) so sign up is on a first come first serve basis.  Students are welcome to arrive at the school at 7:45am Tues, Weds and Thurs to hand in their sheet and money.  Sign up will close at 8:30am and open again for half an hour after school.  Sign ups cannot happen during class time or through the main office.
