Cancelled Girls Soccer Game – Tuesday

The CMLSAA has asked that all schools cancel soccer games for Tuesday, Oct 1 due to unsafe fields from the snow.  Soccer coaches will make a decision tomorrow regarding whether or not there will be a light practice and athletes are to contact home once this decision has been made.

Game play for the remainder of the week will be decided by end of day tomorrow.

Cross Country Postpone

The Canmore Park final cross country meet has been postponed due to weather and will change to Thursday Oct 3.  The race locations and start times are the same, but will occur on Thursday rather than Wednesday.  Hopefully the snow is gone, but we strongly encourage conversation with your runner regarding appropriate wear for before, during and after the race.  In case of cooler temperatures, please ensure you are prompt in pick up to avoid athletes getting too cold after their race.

There will be a meeting and practice on Tuesday at lunch and after school. Wednesday is a rest day and there will be no practice before race day on Thursday.

Welcome Winter… Err, I Mean, Fall!

After a really good start to our school year, we are excited to head into our next month and module.  For our grade 7-9, we have a week of mini modules before heading into a month of volleyball.  For our grade 6s, we have only one week left of this module round and then we head into new modules.  Remember, if you are in soccer or football this week to pack WARM PE gear to change into and change out of in case you get wet on the field.

Our Terry Fox Run was awesome.  I can’t even say enough thank yous to the kids and their efforts this month… we raised nearly $5000, had kids dressing up for Terry Tuesdays, kids losing their hair in the name of cancer research, kids showing leadership in their roles at the assembly and ALL the kids who attended on Friday to be part of the event behaved in a way that makes me so proud to be part of CNG community.  You kids are AH-MAZING!!!  I adore you!

We have some exciting sports action this week:

  • Oct 1 – Girls Soccer home game and jr boys volleyball home game
  • Oct 2 – Final cross country meet (see past post for more details)
  • Oct 3 – Sr boys volleyball travels to Nose Creek to play

Good luck the all CNG athletes!!!

Terry Fox Run 2019

We have had an awesome month rediscovering and celebrating Terry Fox and also preparing for our run.  We had a massively successful No Hair, Do Care!  event on Tuesday where 7 students shaved their heads and 3 cut off their pony tails!  The male staff on the grade 8 team also paid up their debt… they all waxed their legs after the grade 8 students were able to raise over $1000!  We do have a couple more big hair changes happening on Friday at the kick-off assembly.

We will be doing our annual run rain or shine on Friday.  It is super important that the students dress for the weather.  Any students who are planning to run the course should have a light layer over a tshirt and all students who are planning to walk should bundle up just in case.  We will be bringing the students back into the gym after the run to warm up and hydrate.

If you have any questions about Friday, please email Ms Connolley.

Cross Country Team Update

Our running team has had an incredible season so far!!!  We’ve broken into the top ten (out of 35) schools at both meets so far and we are SUPER proud of our team.

The final race is at Canmore Park on Wednesday, October 2. Races start at 5:00 PM for Grade 6 girls, and will continue from there. Runners are encouraged to arrive for 4:30 PM so they have a chance to walk to course prior to running the race. The course closes at 4:45 in preparation for the race to start at 5:00 sharp. The athletes will receive a physical map on race day, but if you would like a digital copy earlier please do not hesitate to email Mr Miller or Ms Meltzer.

Good luck team!

CROSS COUNTRY TEAM NEWS!!!

The Cross-Country team is open to all students and will run practices every Monday-Thursday after school until 3:45pm. The team will be engaging in community runs and each athlete must submit their tryout form in order to participate in practices. Athletes are encouraged to attend as many practices as possible for the short season. Please check out the season letter for more information on practices and meets. Also, the Acknowledgement of Risk form is required for all participating runners. Come out and run with us! All are welcome!

New Year, New US!

We are super excited to be back at it with our student the past 5 days!  And we’re even more thrilled to be seeing them more often than last year!

This year, with our new timetable, we are able to fit all students into the changeroom during their PE block.  This means ALL kids are expected to change for every PE class!  Change rooms can be challenging for some kids for all different reasons, so students are also welcome to use the washroom to change if it suits their needs better.  Gym strip can be bought at the main office at any time, or students can purchase their own from elsewhere.  We are too fussy as long as it’s not what they wore to school, it allows them to move to the best of their ability (NO JEANS!) and it keeps their bodies smelling fresh out in the hallways of CNG!

Grade 6s have started their module rounds.  This round includes floor hockey, compound games, soccer and flag football.  All students get to try each of these sports for a week.  It’s important that our students participating in PE outside have a hoodie or sweater and a spare pair of socks in their gym bags

The grade 7-9s have begun their soccer module.  We re-jigged the format this year and we are putting out a challenge for each sport to find their highest level of personal achievement.  We started last week with an opening tournament and we’ve placed them in their starting point level.  Today we talked with the kids in their starting levels and let them know the check of 5 skills they need to consistently complete to move on to the next level.  We are super excited about meeting students where they are at in each different level and working hard to develop skills and understandings to move them along to the next challenge group.  As students complete their checklist, they have the opportunity to advance at any point in the module.  Our hope is that ALL students feel they have become better soccer players and we have as many students as possible striving for EXCELLENCE.  We will complete the module with another tournament with the students in their final grouping.

TERRY FOX NEWS!!!  I hope you have heard from your child(ren) about the Searching for Terry, Terry Fox Scavenger Hunt that is going on at CNG right now.  They have many items they are attempting to collect in hopes to earn as many points as possible for their homeroom.  Some are items, some are photo evidence, some are fundraising (either collecting cash or signing up online), some are hair donations (if your child wants to shave head they can collect a permission form from Mr Miller by Sept 19).  Some points will come from participation in our Terry Tuesdays.  Tomorrow is the first one called “WORKOUT WEAR-ATHON”.  This is to honor Terry’s personal running race by sporting our best race/marathon tshirts, workout gear or running clothes.  Get in the spirit of being part of something fun CNG!

Cross Country has started up and they are training EVERY day of the week!  The coaches are attempting to make practice as convenient as possible for all kids.  Athletes are to make it to as many sessions as they can, but one a week is the requirement.  Forms went home Friday, but more details will be posted here as they arrive.  Cross country is awesome because there is no cost to compete and the students only ever race against students in their same grade/gender.  There is an optional $40 UnderArmour Phoenix Athletics hoodie available for purchase through PE if any athletes are interested.

Soccer tryouts have also started up.  Both teams had their first one last week and will have their second this week.  Good luck to all those trying out!

Volleyball tryouts start the week of Sept 16th.  The schedule is listed in the weekly newsletter.  We are hosting some open gym time this week for students to practice up their skills (or just play for fun) on Tuesday and Wednesday.  All students are welcome one or both the days!

And, if we don’t have enough going on, we are also trying to use the gym to connect as many kids as possible at CNG during lunch and before school.  There is intramurals daily and students can refer to the schedule on the announcements to find when their grade is in.  Fridays continue to be for Fit Club at 7:15am.  We had an absolutely incredible group who showed up on the very first Friday of the school year and I cannot even wait to see how our group grows in size and strength!

Any questions at all this school year, please don’t hesitate to reach out.  Email me (alconnolley@cbe.ab.ca) at anytime and I’ll get back to you as soon as possible.  It’s going to be the best year yet!
