New Year, New US!

We are super excited to be back at it with our student the past 5 days!  And we’re even more thrilled to be seeing them more often than last year!

This year, with our new timetable, we are able to fit all students into the changeroom during their PE block.  This means ALL kids are expected to change for every PE class!  Change rooms can be challenging for some kids for all different reasons, so students are also welcome to use the washroom to change if it suits their needs better.  Gym strip can be bought at the main office at any time, or students can purchase their own from elsewhere.  We are too fussy as long as it’s not what they wore to school, it allows them to move to the best of their ability (NO JEANS!) and it keeps their bodies smelling fresh out in the hallways of CNG!

Grade 6s have started their module rounds.  This round includes floor hockey, compound games, soccer and flag football.  All students get to try each of these sports for a week.  It’s important that our students participating in PE outside have a hoodie or sweater and a spare pair of socks in their gym bags

The grade 7-9s have begun their soccer module.  We re-jigged the format this year and we are putting out a challenge for each sport to find their highest level of personal achievement.  We started last week with an opening tournament and we’ve placed them in their starting point level.  Today we talked with the kids in their starting levels and let them know the check of 5 skills they need to consistently complete to move on to the next level.  We are super excited about meeting students where they are at in each different level and working hard to develop skills and understandings to move them along to the next challenge group.  As students complete their checklist, they have the opportunity to advance at any point in the module.  Our hope is that ALL students feel they have become better soccer players and we have as many students as possible striving for EXCELLENCE.  We will complete the module with another tournament with the students in their final grouping.

TERRY FOX NEWS!!!  I hope you have heard from your child(ren) about the Searching for Terry, Terry Fox Scavenger Hunt that is going on at CNG right now.  They have many items they are attempting to collect in hopes to earn as many points as possible for their homeroom.  Some are items, some are photo evidence, some are fundraising (either collecting cash or signing up online), some are hair donations (if your child wants to shave head they can collect a permission form from Mr Miller by Sept 19).  Some points will come from participation in our Terry Tuesdays.  Tomorrow is the first one called “WORKOUT WEAR-ATHON”.  This is to honor Terry’s personal running race by sporting our best race/marathon tshirts, workout gear or running clothes.  Get in the spirit of being part of something fun CNG!

Cross Country has started up and they are training EVERY day of the week!  The coaches are attempting to make practice as convenient as possible for all kids.  Athletes are to make it to as many sessions as they can, but one a week is the requirement.  Forms went home Friday, but more details will be posted here as they arrive.  Cross country is awesome because there is no cost to compete and the students only ever race against students in their same grade/gender.  There is an optional $40 UnderArmour Phoenix Athletics hoodie available for purchase through PE if any athletes are interested.

Soccer tryouts have also started up.  Both teams had their first one last week and will have their second this week.  Good luck to all those trying out!

Volleyball tryouts start the week of Sept 16th.  The schedule is listed in the weekly newsletter.  We are hosting some open gym time this week for students to practice up their skills (or just play for fun) on Tuesday and Wednesday.  All students are welcome one or both the days!

And, if we don’t have enough going on, we are also trying to use the gym to connect as many kids as possible at CNG during lunch and before school.  There is intramurals daily and students can refer to the schedule on the announcements to find when their grade is in.  Fridays continue to be for Fit Club at 7:15am.  We had an absolutely incredible group who showed up on the very first Friday of the school year and I cannot even wait to see how our group grows in size and strength!

Any questions at all this school year, please don’t hesitate to reach out.  Email me (alconnolley@cbe.ab.ca) at anytime and I’ll get back to you as soon as possible.  It’s going to be the best year yet!
